Tropical Coast of Granada: beaches, coves, and activities in the Mediterranean

Less than an hour from Granada, the Mediterranean appears between sugar cane and avocado cliffs. The Tropical Coast is the Granada coastline: 75 kilometers of coast with calm waters, hard-to-access coves, towns with Moorish castles by the sea, and an average annual temperature of 20 degrees that allows swimming almost all year round. Salobreña, Almuñécar, La Herradura, and Nerja are the stops you shouldn't miss.

Salobreña and Almuñécar: history and sea on the Granada coast

Salobreña is one of the most photogenic villages in the Mediterranean: a white village perched on a volcanic rock with the sea at its feet and a dark sand beach that few travelers expect to find. Almuñécar adds history to the equation: the Majuelo Archaeological Park preserves a Roman garum factory from the 1st century, and the San Miguel Castle has watched over the city from above since the Arab period. Two villages, two characters, one coast.

Herradura

La Herradura and the Nerja Caves: nature and heritage

La Herradura is the most valued cove of the Granada coastline: calm waters protected by a cape, a seabed of posidonia, and one of the best diving spots in the western Mediterranean. Here you can do a scuba diving baptism with certified instructors or simply spend the day at one of the calmest beaches on the coast.

Nerja completes the tour with the Nerja Caves: one of the largest karst cavities in Europe, featuring the tallest stalagmite column in the world and rock paintings over 40,000 years old. The guided visit inside lasts approximately one hour and combines geology, prehistory, and visual spectacle in a single space.

Practical tips for visiting the Costa Tropical

  1. Best time: from May to October for swimming; the Granada coastline has mild winters that allow for off-season visits without crowds.
  2. From Granada: by car, about 50 minutes to Salobreña via the A-44. On an organized tour, pickup is in the center of Granada.
  3. Kayaking and snorkeling: La Herradura is the reference point for water activities; several local companies offer rentals and guided tours.
  4. Nerja Caves: entry is limited; booking in advance during peak season is essential.
  5. Almuñécar: the Parque del Majuelo has free entry; the Castillo de San Miguel charges a reduced entry fee.
