Description
More than six centuries ago, a high-ranking Roman family chose the lands of what is now Salar to build one of the most luxurious residences of ancient Hispania. Its mosaics, architecture, and the secrets that each archaeological campaign continues to unveil make it one of the best-kept heritage treasures of the province of Granada, and also one of the least known outside of it.
Our visit combines the archaeological site and its Interpretation Center with a walk through the village of Salar, one of the so-called Magical Villages of Spain, with transfer, entry, and expert guide included from the center of Granada.
What you will see
- The mosaics of the Villa: Conserved with an extraordinary degree of detail, they narrate the domestic life and refinement of the Roman elite in Andalusia. In quality and importance, comparable to the great villas of Sicily.
- The archaeological site: An active enclave where each excavation campaign brings new findings. More than six centuries of Roman occupation are uncovered in each visit.
- The Interpretation Center: A museum space that contextualizes the findings of the villa and hosts temporary exhibitions on surprisingly broad themes, with unexpected connections to figures of universal art like Picasso.
- The connection with Picasso: One of the curiosities that can only be discovered by visiting Salar, explained by the expert guide during the tour of the Interpretation Center.
- The village of Salar: A municipality recognized as a Magical Village of Spain, with quiet streets and a human scale that contrasts with the intensity of the site.
- The landscape of the Granada Vega: The journey from Granada crosses one of the most fertile valleys of Andalusia, with views of the mountains that frame the round trip.
